A Roof Is Not a Costume
Written by NATTHA / Natthapon Khemmueang
When an architectural project needs to communicate a cultural reference, form can easily become costume.
Add a recognisable roof.
Add a familiar colour.
Add an ornament.
The building becomes immediately legible.
It can also become immediately superficial.

What interested me in BANG CHAK was not simply whether the roof looked Chinese enough.
The more useful questions concerned proportion, silhouette, gravity and movement.
Where does the line begin to rise.
How long can it continue before it feels exaggerated.
How does a large roof meet a human-scale entrance.
How does it sit above glass, screens, landscape and water without overwhelming all of them.

A cultural reference becomes more convincing to me when it can survive after the ornament is removed.
If the proportion, sequence and relationships still carry something meaningful, then the architecture is doing more than dressing itself in an image.
