A Reference Is a QuestionReference

References are useful.

A client may not know the architectural vocabulary for what they want, but they can usually point to an image and say

I like this.

That sentence is valuable.

It is also incomplete.

Reference

Design visualisation showing BANG CHAK’s L-shaped building, circular arrival area, curved roofs and surrounding planting.

What exactly do they like.

The roof.

The colour.

The proportion.

The quietness.

The association with a particular culture.

The feeling that the building is protected by landscape.

Or simply the memory attached to the image.

If the designer stops at the image, the design process becomes reproduction.

If the designer continues asking questions, the reference begins to reveal a brief.

That is the point where I think design becomes useful.

Not when it produces the closest copy.

But when it helps the owner understand more precisely what they were trying to ask for in the first place.
