Before asking which design looks betterก่อนจะถามว่าแบบไหนสวยกว่า

“Which one do you prefer?” is a reasonable question to ask when there are several designs to compare. I have no wish to remove preference from architecture. But I would like to place a few other questions beside it.

“ชอบแบบไหน” เป็นคำถามที่ถามได้เมื่อมีแบบหลายทางเลือก ผมไม่ได้อยากตัดความชอบออกจากสถาปัตยกรรม เพียงแต่อยากวางคำถามอื่นไว้ข้างๆ ด้วย

In the seven facade studies for SUKHUMVIT 105, we explored the direction of the curved corner, surface elements, materials and glazing. Each of these belongs to a building with spaces behind it. Before discussing a favourite image, there is value in tracing where the entrance sits, what the glass reveals and how the frontage relates to the lobby.

More alternatives do not automatically produce a more considered decision. Without something specific to compare, adding images can simply leave us with a longer list of preferences. The point is to become clearer about what changes between options and why that change matters to the brief.

การมีทางเลือกมากขึ้นไม่ได้ทำให้ตัดสินใจรอบคอบขึ้นโดยอัตโนมัติ ถ้าไม่มีเรื่องเฉพาะให้เทียบ การเพิ่มภาพอาจเพียงทำให้รายการความชอบยาวขึ้น สิ่งที่ควรชัดขึ้นคือ แต่ละแบบเปลี่ยนอะไร และความเปลี่ยนแปลงนั้นสำคัญกับโจทย์อย่างไร

I would rather hear someone say what a chosen form allows them to do than simply be told that it is the most attractive. Preference is still there. It just has reasons it can stand beside.
