Waiting is a rather ordinary activity, yet it is easy to design a waiting area as though the time needs to be filled. A room can become crowded with things to look at, even when the person sitting there has come for an entirely different reason.

Looking at the waiting-area design for SUKHUMVIT 105, I am interested in a quieter possibility. The seats are near the glazing, with a view out of the room. Someone could look outside, return to a conversation, or simply let their attention rest somewhere. I do not think every moment spent in a designed space needs to become an appreciation of design.

This does not make comfort a matter of appearances. Seat dimensions, walking space, light and use still need to be examined. A perspective cannot tell us how someone will actually feel while waiting. What it can help us discuss is whether the arrangement leaves room for the person, rather than making the person serve the composition.

The people who arrive will bring their own thoughts with them. I would like a waiting room to make a place for those thoughts too, even when they have nothing to do with the room.
