A tall room, considered from the floor

The most conspicuous part of a double-height room is usually above us. When I look at the lobby design for SUKHUMVIT 105, I want to spend some time looking down as well.

There is a counter to approach, seating beside the glazing, a stair and connections to other parts of the building. These elements have to share the floor. A striking volume overhead does not resolve how someone arrives at the counter or moves past the waiting area.

The project studies reconsidered these relationships while testing the double-height space. That is the useful part of the process for me. Height is a design choice to examine alongside the room, not an improvement that can be assumed merely because the ceiling has moved upwards.

I can appreciate the space above while still asking what happens below it. The view may begin at the ceiling. The person using the room remains on the floor.
