Before the Door
Written by NATTHA / Natthapon Khemmueang
We tend to treat the entrance as an object.
A canopy.
A door.
A lobby.
But arrival begins much earlier.
For someone arriving by car, the architecture may begin when the vehicle slows down and changes direction.
Lobby

BANG CHAK uses an L-shaped configuration around the drop-off area.
That arrangement can be understood as more than a plan geometry.
One wing begins to define one side of the arrival.
The other completes enough of the enclosure for the space to feel held.
Yet the centre remains open.
Drop-off
Plan

That balance interests me.
Welcome does not necessarily mean maximum openness.
Privacy does not necessarily mean maximum enclosure.
Sometimes the useful condition exists between the two.
The building gives you enough edge to feel that you have arrived, then leaves enough opening to make entering feel like an invitation rather than a checkpoint.
