Water Should Have a Job

Water is one of the easiest elements to misuse in architectural visualisation.
Put it beside a building and the image becomes calmer.
Add reflection and the architecture suddenly feels more refined.
But a good rendering is not enough reason to build a body of water.

At BANG CHAK, the more interesting idea is movement.
The water is conceived as something that circulates rather than remaining completely still.
That immediately gives it other possible roles.
It can catch changing light.
It can introduce sound.
It can mark the edge of a route.
It can change what someone notices while walking through the project.

The Dao De Jing uses water as an image of adaptability and non-contention.
Again, I would rather use that as a question than as a claim about the origin of the project.
What can architecture learn from something that changes according to what surrounds it while remaining recognisably itself?
Water does that naturally.
Architecture has to work harder.
