A Garden You Discover by Walking

Written by NATTHA / Natthapon Khemmueang

A garden becomes much more interesting to me when it cannot be understood from a single photograph.

Chinese garden traditions offer a useful precedent.

Views unfold through movement.

A wall hides something.

A window isolates something else.

A path changes direction.

The landscape is discovered rather than presented all at once.

Ji Cheng's writing on garden making describes different kinds of borrowed views, while historical Chinese gardens often organise architecture and paths around changing perspectives.

I am interested less in copying those gardens than in the mechanism behind them.

A landscape can influence architecture without becoming scenery.

At BANG CHAK, bamboo, water, stones, planting and places to pause can enter the route itself.

You do not only see the garden after reaching a room.

You meet parts of it while moving through the building.

Once landscape begins to alter movement, orientation, privacy and pause, it has already become architecture.
