Fill every compartment with books and objects, and this corner of NONG CHOM would begin to change. The shelf might still be useful for storage, but the room beyond would become harder to see.

In the design image, the shelf is carrying two jobs. Its uprights and horizontal boards give the sitting area a boundary. The spaces between them let another activity remain in view. Calling it furniture does not quite describe the effect it has on the room.

That is also why I would be precise about the word privacy. A broken view is not a closed room. There is no solid barrier here, and a conversation on the other side has not disappeared because it is partly out of sight.

What I like is the degree of separation, enough to make the sofa area recognisable while keeping it involved in the larger interior. The empty compartments are doing some of that work. They need not all be waiting for something to fill them.
