The Square Metres We Chose Not to Build
Written by NATTHA / Natthapon Khemmueang
A development project makes every square metre very easy to see as a number.
Which makes deliberately leaving part of a compact house open a decision that needs a reason.
At the centre of THA MUANG is a courtyard.
Courtyard

On a spreadsheet, it might look like an area that could have become more enclosed floor. But architecture does not exist only inside a spreadsheet.
That opening gives the surrounding spaces another edge. It is intended to allow daylight to reach further into the depth of the plan, create another possible path for air movement and give the eye somewhere further to travel.

The question therefore becomes less about the area we lost, and more about what the rest of the house gained because we chose not to build there.
Not every valuable square metre needs a roof over it.
